Commission on the chemistry of volcanic gases (CCVG)
IAVCEI 11TH Gas workshop

Kamchatka, Russia
1-10 September 2011

Second Circular

Invitation

On behalf of the hosting geochemical community from the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) we are happy to invite the international geochemical scientific group working on volcanic gases to participate in the 2011 Gas Workshop to be held in Kamchatka, Russia, between 1st and 10th September 2011.

The main topics of the workshop are the intercomparison of results of the simultaneous geochemical sampling, remote sensing methods and discussions of the current problems of the theory and practice of volcano degassing.

Scientific Programme

The programme will include a scientific meeting focused mainly on geochemistry of volcanic gases. The main topics will be:

Conference
1. New techniques, including sample collection, lab analysis and field spectroscopy, for measurement of inorganic, organic gas and aerosol composition (including isotopes) of fumaroles, diffuse emissions and plumes.
2. Modelling frameworks for interpretation of volcanic (magmatic) fluid geochemistry
3. Atmospheric chemistry of volcanic plumes; environmental and human health impacts of volcanic degassing.
4. Measurements of volcanic plumes using space-based remote sensing.
5. Deep Carbon Observatory session. Discussion about long-term monitoring of volcanic gas emissions and a global gas monitoring network.

Field
1. Direct sampling and remote sensing of gases emitted from fumaroles at Mutnovsky volcano
2. Measurements of soil degassing at Mutnovsky geothermal field 11th Gas Workshop, Kamchatka, Russia CCVG-IAVCEI
3. Plume Measurements at Gorely and/or Karymsky volcanoes

Registration Fee: not yet defined, coming soon. It will cover (almost) all expenses of your staying. At first glance it is around $1100 USD.

Includes:

  • Staying in the hotels "Geyser", "Flamingo" and in the Rodnikovaya Spa Camp during the workshop, including meals, coffee breaks and box-lunches
  • Transportation (in prices of 2010; it is probably that the helicopter time will cost more)
  • Folder and materials (T-shirt, folder, pen, program, copies of papers)

    Organization and Logistics

A Kamchatkan tour company "Volcanolog Tour" will be responsible for organization and logistics of our staying in Kamchatka. We dont know yet, but it seems that the fee should be paid through a bank transfer. Everyone who will be pre-registered and whose participation is accepted will receive the necessary banking information. The Volcanolog Tour will be also responsible for the invitation letter for visa application.

If you have any questions you can contact directly Mr. Yuri Pushkarev who will handle our workshop, by email: inest@kscnet.ru

    Custom

To avoid problems with the Russian custom we need to follow a special procedure well before the workshop. Some 6 month before arriving in Russia, a detailed list of the equipment that will cross the Russian border should be prepared. A special letter for the custom authorities then will be sent to each group or person transporting equipment. Necessary details about the format of the needed data will be mailed to the community later.
